The lake where some of the bodies of Khmer Rouge victims still lie today inside the "Killing Fields", known in Khmer as Choeung Ek. Fifteen kilometers from Phnom Penh, this whole area was an ancient Chinese community cemetery. In 1980, 129 graves were found here, with about 9,000 victims, men, women, and children. More than 300 extermination camps have been identified in Cambodia. Eighty of them are monuments today. Choeung Ek is the largest one. Between April of 1975 and January of 1979, the Khmer Rouge regime was responsible for the death of about 2 million people in Cambodia, in one of the most lethal regimes of the 20th century. 2019 marked the 40th anniversary of the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime.
