Shrine displaying 8000 human skulls in the “killing fields” of Choeung Ek, located on the outskirts of Phnom Penh. This is one of the thousands of sites around the country where the Khmer Rouge practiced genocide and killed around 20% of its own population during the late 1970s. Between April of 1975 and January of 1979, the Khmer Rouge regime was responsible for the death of about 2 million people in Cambodia, in one of the most lethal regimes of the 20th century. 2019 marked the 40th anniversary of the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime. Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
