Carmen foi inspirado livremente na obra do romancista francês Prosper Merimée e foi a primeira obra cênica da mítica colaboração de Antonio Gades com o cineasta Carlos Saura. A Compañia Antonio Gades é considerada ainda hoje o principal ícone da dança espanhola e principal representante da dança flamenca no mundo.
