Temple ruins at Angkor Archeological Park. Angkor was the better-known capital of the Khmer Empire that ruled between the late 9th to 15th centuries, was the largest pre-industrial urban center in the world, and governed much of modern-day Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and parts of Southern China and Myanmar, and of course Cambodia. The Khmer Rouge nationalism leaders believed that under their power, Cambodia would regain the international status and grandeur it had during the Khmer Empire. Angkor Archeological Park, Cambodia.
